Distance Ph.D.
Concentration in Microbial and Cellular Data Science. A doctoral program designed for working scientists
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
A distance Ph.D. doesn't have to mean choosing between doctoral research and the career, research environment or community you've already built. The Distance Ph.D. is designed for scientists and professionals who want to pursue advanced research in microbial and cellular data science while continuing their careers and professional commitments.
The 100% online, asynchronous format lets you pursue doctoral study from where you are while working with University of Florida faculty on original research. You can bring your existing scientific experience, research questions, data and professional connections into your doctoral training rather than stepping away from the work you've already built.
The program combines microbiology and cell science with computational biology, programming, statistics and other data-driven approaches, preparing you to investigate complex biological questions and contribute new knowledge through original research. And you're earning that doctorate through the University of Florida, a Carnegie R1 research university, without relocating to Gainesville.
For professionals in research, biotechnology, bioinformatics, data science and related fields, the Distance Ph.D. offers a way to advance your scientific expertise through rigorous doctoral research without putting your career or life on pause.
Find Your Research Mentor
Your doctoral research begins with the right research question and the right faculty mentor. Explore MCS faculty research areas to identify potential mentors whose work aligns with your interests. Faculty determine whether they have an appropriate research project available for a Distance Ph.D. student, and not every faculty member has a project that fits the program.
PROGRAM BENEFITS
The Distance Ph.D. is designed for scientists and professionals who want to take on more advanced research, computational and scientific leadership without stepping away from their current careers.
You'll develop expertise in microbial and cellular data science while strengthening the skills that matter across research-intensive careers: designing research, analyzing complex data, communicating scientific findings and translating evidence into new knowledge.
Apply advanced research and data science skills to discovery, development, genomics and other areas of biotechnology and pharmaceutical science.
Use biological expertise alongside programming, statistics and computational methods to analyze complex datasets and answer biological questions.
Build the research expertise needed for scientific careers in universities, research institutes and other research organizations.
Apply advanced scientific and analytical skills to research and public challenges across government agencies and other science-focused organizations.
As biology becomes increasingly data-driven, scientists who can combine biological expertise with computational and data science skills are positioned to contribute to growing areas of science and technology. Advanced tools, including AI, are changing how research is done, but they still require scientists who understand the biology behind the data and know how to apply these tools effectively. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continued growth, up to 4% by 2034, in life science and related occupations, with opportunities across research, biotechnology, health and other scientific fields.

RESOURCES & SUPPORT

Connect directly with an MCS program advisor to discuss our on-campus and Distance Ph.D. options. Exploring your path to doctoral study? We can also help you understand how our M.S. and graduate certificates may fit into your academic and career goals.
Yes. The Distance Ph.D. is 100% online and asynchronous. Students complete coursework remotely and participate in research collaboration, seminars and other doctoral activities virtually. Some activities may offer synchronous participation when appropriate.
No. Departmental stipends are not available for Distance Ph.D. students. A principal investigator may choose to provide stipend support for an exceptional candidate, but this support is not guaranteed. Students may also explore employer education benefits and external funding opportunities.
Yes. Applicants must have a master's degree of at least 30 credits in the life sciences with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Preference is given to applicants with academic backgrounds emphasizing microbiology and/or cell biology and applicants with strong preparation in computational biology, programming or statistics.
The program focuses on Microbial and Cellular Data Science, combining microbiology and cell science with computational biology, programming, statistics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and other data-driven approaches to biological research.
Applicants should identify MCS faculty whose research aligns with their interests and indicate those research interests in their application. Faculty determine whether they have an appropriate research project available for a Distance Ph.D. student, and not every faculty member has a project that fits the program.
