Turn Scientific Curiosity Into Specialized Expertise

Graduate certificates in microbiology are not a detour. They are a deliberate move. And some of the most competitive candidates in microbiology, healthcare and research are not waiting for a full degree to differentiate themselves.

These programs are built for students who want to add graduate-level clinical or research credentials that stand on their own, stack into an M.S. or strengthen a professional school application.

Whether you are accelerating into a specialized field, strengthening an application to medical or doctoral programs, or building on an existing degree, a certificate is how you arrive at the next stage with something most candidates do not have.

Focused coursework. Recognized credentials. A University of Florida program that takes approximately one year to complete.

    What a certificate does:

    • Adds a recognized clinical or research credential to your profile
    • Signals graduate-level scientific training to employers and admissions committees
    • Accelerates your path into specialized laboratory and research roles
    • Strengthens graduate and professional school applications with documented, field-specific expertise
    • Pairs with the M.S. to build one of the most competitive credential combinations in the life sciences

These programs are built to stand alone or stack. A certificate on its own is a legitimate, focused credential that opens doors in clinical science, research and biotechnology. Paired with the M.S., it is one of the more differentiated combinations available in graduate microbiology education, and it is increasingly what competitive applicants to medical, dental and doctoral programs are seeking.

Courses are delivered online* and structured for working professionals and recent graduates. Students can complete most certificates within about one year depending on pace and course load.

*The Certified Laboratory Microbiologist certificate is a hybrid program requiring two in-person modules.

Turn Your Microbiology Expertise Into A Clinical Career

Interested in a career in clinical microbiology? The hybrid Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist (CLM) Graduate Certificate gives you specialized training in clinical microbiology, with hands-on experience and professional preparation to put your science to work in the clinical laboratory.

This 18-credit hybrid graduate certificate combines advanced coursework with real-world clinical training in areas including clinical bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology, antimicrobial resistance and clinical microbiology laboratory methods. It is the first Medical Laboratory Microbiologist program in the U.S. accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

The best part? Pair the CLM with UF's online M.S. in Medical Microbiology & Biochemistry with the CLM in as few as 34 total credits.

For out-of-state students, pairing the CLM with the M.S. can also make a significant difference in cost. Instead of paying the standalone out-of-state CLM tuition rate, the combined pathway brings the cost of the CLM coursework down substantially. Based on current tuition rates, adding the CLM to the M.S. costs approximately 78% less than pursuing the CLM as a standalone certificate for an out-of-state student.

If clinical microbiology is where you want your science to take you, this is a path built to get you there.

*The hybrid Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist graduate certificate includes two required in-person components: a 5-day on-site lab bootcamp and a two-week clinical internship. Internship placements are arranged near the student's place of residence whenever possible. Completion in Gainesville is not required. Additionally, in-state tuition is not offered with the CLM as a standalone credential. However, pairing the CLM with the M.S. qualifies you for in-state tuition.
