Description of Research

General area: regulation of cells by proteolytic enzymes and a specialization in proteasomes (multicatalytic nucleotide-dependent proteases) from the methanogenic and halophilic archaea.

Interests also include metabolic engineering of bacteria with emphasis on the structure-function of pyruvate decarboxylase for optimization of its activity in organisms growing at high temperature and low pH.  Her research employs biochemical, molecular, genomic, and structural biology techniques to investigate fundamental aspects of microbial metabolism and physiology.
