Advanced Labs - Spring 2007 Information

Registration in MCB 4034L is limited and students are assigned seats based upon graduation status and priority.  It is departmentally controlled so you must fill out a MCB 4034L request form for the lab in order to put your name on a list for a seat.  You can download the form via this web page:  http://microcell.ifas.ufl.edu/4034ladvlabform.pdf

Please return the form to Janet Lyles in  the Main office of the Microbiology Building.  Seats will be filled on a first-come-first served bases based upon graduation priority.  If you don't get a seat in MCB 4034L, you will need to schedule an alternative lab below to meet the 1 credit advanced lab requirement.

Advanced Labs Spring  2007 Information:

If all sections of MCB 4034L, Advanced Lab, in the spring semester are closed  it is not anticipated that any other sections will be offered.  You will need to take an alternative lab to meet the department advanced lab requirement.
These spring labs are acceptable for fulfilling the Microbiology Advanced Lab requirement.  If you try to register for one of the labs outside of the Microbiology Department and cannot, please call the department the course is offered in directly.  The Microbiology Department cannot get you registered for any labs in other departments.

MCB 5303L - Laboratory for Microbial Genetics, 2 credits, Prereq:  MCB 3020/3020L - Basic Biology of Microorganisms and Lab, and MCB 4304 – Genetics of Microorganisms, or PCB 4522 – Molecular Genetics. Dr. Shanmugam. Methods for mutagenesis, gene transfer and genetic mapping, plasmid isolation, restriction enzyme use, construction of chimeric (recombinant) plasmids, phage isolation and preparation. Dr. Shanmugam. Spring, 20007 – This lab is tentatively scheduled to meet Tuesday and Thursday, periods 3-5.

CHM 4411L - Physical Chemistry Lab, 2 credits. Prereq:  CHM 4411 – Physical Chemistry. A series of laboratory experiments designed to accompany CHM 4411.

EES 4102 L - Environmental Biology Laboratory, 1 credit, Prereqs: There are no prerequisites for this lab. Focuses on the biota (microorganisms, algae, zooplankton, fish, plants) found in natural (lakes and wetlands) and engineered systems, ecological engineering approach to management of surface waters and ecological modeling.

FOS 4222L - Food Microbiology Lab, 2 credits. Prereqs: MCB 2000L or MCB 3020L. This lab is departmentally controlled by the Food Science Dept.

Advanced Labs Fall 2007 Information

MCB 4034L, Advanced Lab will have two sections of 72 seats available for registration (based upon demand). These seats are open to any Microbiology and Cell Science major classified 4UF MCB or MCY who meet the prerequisite requirements.

4UF MCB or 4 UF MCY are Microbiology majors in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences or Liberal Arts and Sciences who have achieved Senior status at the time of advance registration.  If you have the prerequisites met, you will be eligible to complete a registration form for a seat.

This lab has previously been departmentally controlled for graduating seniors only.  If you are a Spring 2008 graduate who meets the criteria, you will have an opportunity to register for the lab in the fall instead.  We encourage you to take the lab in the fall if it fits your schedule because of a concern for meeting the demand in the spring.

The policy remains unchanged for registration in the lab.  Complete a registration form and return it to the main office for enrollment.  Please do that as soon as possible as we will fill the seats on a first-come, first-served basis.

You can download the registration form at: http://microcell.ifas.ufl.edu/4034ladvlabform.pdf

If the two sections of MCB 4034L, Advanced Lab, in the fall semester are full, it is not anticipated that additional sections of this lab will be opened.  If you try to register for one of the labs in a different department and cannot, please call the department the course is offered in directly.  The Microbiology Department cannot register you for any labs in other departments.  These fall labs are acceptable for fulfilling the Microbiology Advanced Lab requirement.  Students in need of fulfilling their Advanced Lab requirement for their microbiology degree have the following options available to them:
