Transfer Students
Transfer Guide
Students can apply to be admitted to the Microbiology and Cell Science major in either the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The department core and elective requirements are identical for both colleges. The differences occur in the college requirements. LS requires students to show proficiency in a foreign language at the college level. This usually means, a student must take a minimum of 10 credits of a foreign language at the university level to exhibit proficiency if they do not already speak a foreign language fluently. High school foreign language does not fulfill this requirement. AG requires students to show proficiency in oral and written communication as well as economics. This requirement involves one course in speech, one course in technical writing, and one course in economics Please refer to the college requirement page for more information regarding these college requirements and the specific courses to complete them..
A.A. course work should minimally include completion of the following prerequisite course work with a minimum math/science GPA of 2.5 in all attempts and a grade of no less than a "C" in the following courses.
Prerequisites
- MAC 2311, Calculus 1
- General Chemistry 1 and 2, CHM 2045 + CHM 2045L and CHM 2046Lab + CHM 2046 Lab OR
CHM 2045C and CHM 2046C. - Core Biology 1 and 2, BSC 2010 + BSC 2010L and BSC 2011 + BSC 2011 Lab OR BSC 2010C and BSC 2011C.
*BOT 1010/BOT 1010 Lab or ZOO 1010/ZOO 1010 Lab satisfy the BSC 2011 + BSC 2011 Lab requirement (Biology 2).
A maximum of 60 credits from a community college can be attributed toward fulfillment of the120 credit hour minimum requirement. A student's failure to meet and comply with fulfillment of the courses required for admittance, failure to meet the GPA requirement or a grade of less than a C in any of the courses can result in a hold being placed on the student's record preventing future registration. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they have met all requirements for entry into the microbiology major.
Higher level chemistry and physics courses do not have to be completed prior to transferring into the major but it is beneficial to have one or more them completed prior to transferring to UF.
CHM 2210 Organic Chemistry OR CHM 2210C
CHM 2211 Organic Chemistry OR CHM 2211C
CHM 2211 Lab OR CHM 2210 Lab and CHM 2211 Lab
PHY 2053 Physics 1 + PHY 2053 Lab(w/o Calculus) OR
PHY 2048 +2048 Lab (w/calculus) OR PHY 2053C or PHY2048C
PHY 2054 Physics 2 + PHY 2045 Lab(w/o Calculus) OR
PHY 2049 + 2049 Lab (w/calculus) OR PHY 2054C or 2249C
Since Organic Chemistry, CHM 2210, is a prerequisite for most of the required and elective microbiology departmental courses, it is in your best interest to attempt to complete it before attending UF. However, it is strongly recommend that you take CHM 2210 and CHM 2211 at the same institution. It is not recommended that you split the two courses between two different institutions.
Refer to the Department Degree Requirement link and college links to assist you in planning a schedule for your remaining semesters at the University of Florida.
Please note that these are only recommended schedules based on the incoming students previous course work, remaining microbiology course work requirements here at UF and the students ultimate goals. These suggested schedules do not include any outstanding college, and university requirements (such as the foreign language requirement, additional Composition /Social and Behavioral Sciences / Humanities course work requirements, etc.). These schedules are only reflective of outstanding microbiology related course work and possible appropriate course work related to a students future application to higher education institutions.
Transfer students should contact the transfer student representative of their appropriate college. For the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences please contact Mrs. Lou Powers, (352) 392-1521, lpowers@advising.ufl.edu
